School Board looks at budget cut options at workshop session
Glencoe-Silver Lake Superintendent Chris Sonju presented a proposal of $76,000 to $126,000 in reductions to the school board at a work session Tuesday, April 25.
Sonju stressed that the district is in a very healthy financial position, but it is looking ahead to maintain the 20 percent general fund balance set by the board.
Many of the proposed reductions could be implemented as the result of planned retirements or resignations.
The proposed reductions have been brought to the board based on a continued trend of declining enrollment. While more students are expected in the next school year, the district won’t have final numbers until fall.
One proposed reduction would be to reduce the number of class sections in fourth grade from five to four. There are currently under 100 students in the grade, which would leave class sizes around 25 per section.
