School Board OKs hiring of 2 teachers for STEM initiative
The Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board approved the request to hire two full-time teachers to be lead teachers for the district’s new Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiative with the company Project Lead the Way.
The two new positions will begin the 2016-2017 school year and will work at the elementary level to provide support and instruction for the implementation of STEM.
Before the School Board voted, Business Manager Michelle Sander presented a review of the district’s budget. The two new full-time positions would add an extra expenditure of about $100,000.
Sander reviewed the ways the district could offset this cost. The district will already have an additional $39,000 due to retirement. She said it could also look at holding off on facility projects since the district will have new construction, waiting on technology upgrades or changing class sizes.
The motion passed 4-2, with Board Members Jamie Alsleben and Kevin Kuester voting no.
Kuester clarified that his vote was not against the STEM initiative itself, but the hiring of the two teachers.
