School Board OKs operating levy for referendum
Hoping to maintain the district’s existing level of programming and rebuild its fund balance to a healthier level, the Glencoe-Silver Lake School Board approved a proposal to ask voters to approve an increase in the operating levy at the Nov. 6 general election.
Monday night, Aug. 13, the school board unanimously approved replacing the $476.88 per pupil unit levy authority set to expire in June of 2020 with $300 per pupil unit controlled by the school board in five-year segments. The board will also ask voters to approve a $460 per pupil unit levy for 10 years, an increase of $283.12 per pupil unit.
The money per pupil unit is based on the number of students living in the Glencoe-Silver Lake School District, regardless of where they go to school. The ‘weighted’ portion of the formula is based on the state valuing elementary-schoolers being at 1.0 pupil units while seventh- through 12th-graders are worth 1.2 pupil units, said Michelle Sander, GSL’s business manager. The approved requests also include a provision the amount will be adjusted annually with inflation.
