Changes to this year’s Fair
By Dennis Van Moorlehem
Sibley County Fair Board Member
With the 147th annual Sibley County
Fair around the corner I am once again
putting the finishing touches on my annual letter. 2016 brings many changes to
our grounds and also our entertainment.
New this year in the grandstand is the Arlington Raceway Stock Car Shootout,
which will highlight the Wednesday night
presentation. Thursday night’s Night of
Destruction will be a mix of new and return events that should create a large pile
of wrecked iron. Again Saturday night’s Arlington Raceway will present its now famous Stock Car Races. You asked for
speed, noise, and wrecks, here it is for
three nights during the Sibley County Free
Fair. New bands in the entertainment
building this year are SOUTH 40, OUTSIDE
RECESS, and 2ND NOTION. Returning
again this year are Chopper, Ron E. Cash,
Sandra Lee & The Velvets and The Trailblazers.
On Sunday, starting at 8:00 A.M., we
will have the FIRST annual Rib Cook Off.
Come and get hints on how to cook them
and grab a taste while you are at it. Friday
starting at 3:00 P.M. our board and many
volunteers will cook, dip in butter, and
serve, Free Sweet Corn. On Wednesday
our annual Classic Car and Bike Roll In
starts at 5:00 P.M. followed by great entertainment and refreshments in the entertainment building.
The Heritage building/Commercial
building (my baby) has grown to include
great family entertainment as well as
commercial booths, all in one building.
We encourage you to come in, rest your
feet, eat your wonderful fair food at the tables sprinkled around the building, watch
the family entertainment presented each
day, and visit with commercial venders.
This year we have a full daily stage presentations, contests, entertainment, and educational stage shows.
Returning this year on Thursday is our
Bake and Taste highlights and 4-H
Demonstrations. Entertainment at 4:00
P.M. will be Matt & Allen Carlson, a fatherson group, playing classic country and folk
songs. Carver Creek, a great blue grass
family band, returns again this year at
6:30 P.M. A true family band made up by
truly talented musicians.
Friday will have TM Wellness classes,
Century Farm, presentations, sprinkled in
with two great presentations from Doug
Ohman on Minnesota historical background about Elevators and Farm Equipment. Doug’s shows combine his
discoveries as well as pictures he has ran
across in his travels. I personally never
miss his shows. The day’s final presentation is the Jim Lawrance Orchestra. This
band will bring you back to the days you
listened to music without hearing loss.
Join them for a relaxing evening in a cool
ventilated venue built by and for you.
Saturday, Kids Day, will keep the kids
hopping with The Hoopsters, Raptor Center, kid’s pedal pull, kid’s day drawings, as
JK Amusements
well as carnival deals, just for kids. Flemming Fold will bring the Heritage building
to a close starting at 4:00 P.M. with great
blue grass music.
Sunday is Polka Day with polka worship
service followed by the Wendinger Band
until the annual Sibley County Queen judging and coronation starting around 3:00
P.M.
Did I forget the entertainment building?
Not for a second. All of our entertainment
in the building is free as usual, so we have
a great mix again this year. Chopper starts
us off Wednesday night to compliment the
Classic Car and Bike Roll In. Thursday
night 2nd Notion will mix it up. Friday let’s
come early for Free Sweet Corn, Ron E.
Cash followed by South 40 to close out a
great evening. Saturday gets us started at
3:00 P.M. with the one and only Sandra
Lee and The Velvets returning again this
year with rock and country favorites. At
9:00 P.M., Outside Recess will entertain
until the wee hours. Sunday we finish up
the year with a Rib Cook Off followed by
the local favorites The Trailblazers until
closing time.
The list of free
horse events and
animal judging
takes place every
day. The 4-H presentations are bigger than ever as well
as the Horticulture presentations, so check the
posters, magazine and

COUNTY FAIR August 3–7, 2016
Part One . . . numerous changes
As I sit down to write my annual welcome to the Sibley County fair letter, we
have perfect weather and moister, but
lousy prices. Seems like this happens way
too often. I am writing this year’s masterpiece in two parts as the changes to this
year’s fair are so numerous.
The fair board has been busier than we
have been in many years. Starting last fall
we began writing and applying for grants
to upgrade our buildings and grounds. As
of this letter, we have been very lucky.
With the proceeds from the grants we will
replace the roof on the cattle barn as well
as upgrade the milking area and electrical service. It may not be complete by fair
time but will be well on the way.
Next we turned to the sheep & goat
barn. We are starting on a new show ring
on the west end and more new pens inside. We also are installing roof ventilation on the non-animal 4-H building
alleviating a daily inside overheating problem. A new yard light east of the
sheep/goat building will light up that dark
area. The grandstand seating has been
upgraded and the roof below it weatherproofed in most of the seating areas.
Here is a last minute announcement.
WE HAVE JUST COMPLETED A PAVED
PATH FROM THE NORTH SIDE OF THE
HERITAGE BUILDING PAST THE ENTERTAINMENT BUILDING AND THE LEGION
BUILDING TO ACROSS THE STREET
FROM THE FAIR OFFICE. This is the first
step in some day and a small fortune that
we will have all the buildings connected.
This has been the most requested improvement to our grounds for many years.
With this list, a group of businesses
have stepped up to donate and provide
grants. South Central Grain sheep/goat
show ring; AgStar Financial Services new
sheep/goat pens; Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative thru their Operation
Round Up roof ventilation on 4-H non-animal building; Minnesota Legislature/Department of Agriculture new roof on
building 14, the cattle barn. The Sibley
County American Dairy Association donated $2,500 for a much needed milk
house upgrade. The Sibley County 4-H
Federation recently donated $2,000 for
sheep pens, show ring, and milk house
upgrade. Others helping out this year are
McGuire Electric with electrical upgrades;
Prairie Lakes Arts Council a generous entertainment grant; Vos Construction and
Locher Brothers as well as McGuire Electric, all three 2015 Elite sponsors. Finally,
thank you to three Fair Board members
and a Green Isle Farm family who also
donated to our Heritage building. Their
names are on a plaque in the Heritage
building with room for others who would
like to honor someone, a business or
place. Check with the fair office for information if interested.
I only mentioned the larger grants and
sponsors due to room constrictions. The
many smaller donations were used for
many smaller projects and entertain-
ment. All of these donations are considered important to us. We welcome any donations earmarked or otherwise to make
our fair better each year. I am sure as you
visited our fair you have noticed the remarkable changes the past few years.
This has been the result of Sibley County
residents as well as businesses pitching
in to help. The sad thing is we cannot personally thank each of you who donate
money, cash, time, labor, and support to
OUR fair. Be assured OUR means all of us
from fair board to citizens, county commissioners, elected officials, sponsors,
visitors, venders, and the many exhibiters.
THANK YOU!

4-H serves youth in grades kindergarten through one year past high school from all backgrounds and interests. 4-H offers membership without
regard to race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, or handicap. Those who are in kindergarten through grade 3 may participate
through Cloverbuds.
HOW CAN I PARTICIPATE IN 4-H?
Join a local 4-H club — 4-H clubs are groups of youth who meet regularly to work on 4-H projects, perform community service, develop leadership

“Bergmann Interiors was great to
work with. We had purchased flooring from another company and the
installation did not go well. We then
contacted Bergmann Interiors to see
if they could help correct the issues.
Their customer service was wonderful. Both their Technician and Design Consultant were great! We are

Carnival Memories of Mine
By Bridget Jonston
I have dozens of memories of a special
fair in Arlington, Minnesota. My mom grew
up in Minnesota and lived there for most
of her life. She moved out of Minnesota
when she was in her late teens. Anyway,
her parents stayed in a small town called
Arlington. It’s the type of town where
everybody knows everybody and nobody
locks their doors. Everyone trusts each
other and there are some really amazing
things in that town. There is a memorial
site that honors veterans less than a
block away from my grandparents house.
I love to go there late at night and just
seep in all of the love. There is a swing
that is attached to two wooden pegs and
hangs down and just touches the grass.
Oh, the grass. It’s as green as, well grass!
It has tiny yellow buds poking up just high
enough to be stepped on by my feet running to my grandparents light blue house.
On one special night that I remember, my
mom called me in because is was Thursday – the opening night of the county fair!
I couldn’t wait to run on the trampled dirt
and gravel and smell the corn dogs and
the sticky smell of soda. For as long as I
could remember, I had gone to the county
fair in that small town.
When I push open the metal fencing, I
see the big bears. They were wearing
pink, green, blue, purple and yellow
pants! They spin in a circle and those are
the rides that make you dizzy. They were
meant for little kids but sometimes even
I can’t take the spinning! Then I look over
and see the big cylinder. It has colorful
swings attached on metal chains. They
are hanging and I watch as little children
run to a swing, and my cousin pulls at my
arm begging for me to ride it with her. I
say, later and we walk past to the big
tents. As we pass I look over to my left
and see the big ferris wheel. It has rainbow colored steel pieces that attach egg
shaped baskets. They are woven, so the
rider can see out but people on the
ground can barely see in. The seats are
cold and red and just above the seats, a
large black bar rests on your lap so you
don’t, you know, fall out. When you look
past the ferris wheel you can see a red
and yellow carnival games booth. It has a
few balloons hanging on to a white spray
painted cork board and there are a few
cup holders with darts in it. There is a
man behind the booth shouting and beckoning for kids to pay a crazy amount for
five darts! Squished in next to that crazy
booth, is my favorite ride. It’s called the
octopus. It is surrounded by black
speakers with yellow stripes at the
top and bottom. It has eight green
metal “arms” that stick out. There
is a man that has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. He takes my
ticket and helps me get into a tentacle. The seat is cold on my legs
and all I feel is peace, even though
I am about to be whipped around
and around and around until I
can’t walk without throwing up. I
wait for the ride to start and when it finally
does, I smile! I have been waiting for this
moment for a year and when the ride
ends, I get right back in line. Emma, my
sister, runs to the snow-cone booth with
my cousins, Freddy and Lucy, but I stay. I
wait in line for just a couple of minutes.
And then it happens again. That state of
total relaxation. Then I smile. And it’s like
that for half an hour. Wait, relax, smile.
Wait, relax, smile.
I finally join my family in the tent where
my sister has demolished her piña colada
snow-cone and Lucy hasn’t even made a
dent. I see my grandma, talking to all of
her old lady friends. I love the fair. I love
the baby petting zoo and the rides. I love
the connections that people make with
each other and the food. I love the things
you can learn from a carnival. I love the
time that I get to spend with my family
and I love that it’s a tradition. That’s why,
when I think of summer, I think of the carnival. I think of the food, the rides, and the
games. I think of simply happiness!

Raptor Center
Established in 1974 as part of the
University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, The Raptor Center rehabilitates around 800 sick and injured
raptors each year, while helping to identify emerging environmental issues related to raptor health and populations.
Our educational programs are packed
with age-appropriate information that is
both educational and entertaining. We
explore the different raptors found in
Minnesota and their role in the environment. We also educate the public on
the positive and negative impact humans have on our environment and
about The Raptor Center and its important role in protecting raptors and the
world we share.

“Since its beginning in 2010, Carver Creek Bluegrass has delighted audiences with
their pleasant mix of Old-time, Bluegrass, Irish, and Gospel music. Sherry (age 22)
plays guitar and mandolin and also does most of the lead vocals with her clear sweet
voice. Tom (age 20) plays banjo, guitar, pennywhistle, and musical saw and sings
male lead and harmony. Julie (age 19) plays bass and lends her cheery voice to the
mix. Mary (age 12) does fiddle and vocals and Jim (age 7) tells jokes and sings. When
the five siblings get together to play music, there’s never a dull moment.”
