Silver Lake City Council hires police chief with 3-2 vote
The Silver Lake City Council voted 3-2 to extend an offer to Evan Brown for the open police chief position. Mayor Dorothy Butler and Councilor Chris Penas cast the dissenting votes.
The council interviewed Brown and Matthew Steihm at a workshop Monday, March 9.
City Clerk Jon Jerabek reported that he and McLeod County Sherriff Scott Rehmann felt Brown would be a good fit for the city. Butler was bothered by a comment Brown made about not being able to apply for a chief position in a community he had previously worked.
The council had concerns about his lack of experience as a chief but were impressed with his dedication to community involvement.
Butler informed the council the hiring committee didn’t recommend bringing forth the second candidate.
