Silver Lake Council approves 5.6 percent tax levy increase

The city council approved at 5.6 percent preliminary tax levy increase at its meeting on Monday night.
Minnesota state statute requires governing bodies (city councils, school boards, county boards, etc.) to approve a preliminary tax levy by Sept. 30. The levy amount can be reduced, but not increased before it is certified in December.
The total proposed tax levy increased to $528,761.10 from $500,725.85 in 2018. The 2017 tax levy was $480,127.20.
The proposed general fund portion of the levy is $504,775 up from $477,194 in 2018. The general fund levy was $410,994.20 in 2017.
The debt service portion of the levy increased 1.93 percent from $23,531 to $23,986. It was $69,133.20 in 2017.
City Clerk Jon Jerabek told the council that he estimated high for wage increases and health insurance increases which won’t be known until later this fall.
