Silver Lake residents stand for their police officers

Silver Lake residents sent their city council a clear message at its Tuesday night meeting: most residents are proud of their police department — even if it costs more than outsourcing to the county sheriff’s office.
Council members indicated contracting hours to the sheriff’s office hasn’t been less expensive in years past, though. According to current and past council members, as well as citizens at the Jan. 22 meeting, whenever a Silver Lake officer resigns, the council contemplates outsourcing hours to the sheriff’s department.
The city lost Officer Kyle Jorgenson due to concerns of losing his job to the county according to fellow officer and Police Chief R.J. Cripps, who also said he’s had “sleepless nights” from fears of losing his position.
Former Council Member Pat Fogarty, who served on the council for 11 years, got estimates from the county three times, and each time prices increased. He said Silver Lake’s police department costs have remained relatively flat.
