SL council agrees to hike on-call pay for officers

The Silver Lake City Council voted to increase the police department’s on-call pay to $3 per hour at its Tuesday, Jan. 16, meeting.
The current on-call pay is $2.42 per hour with a two-hour minimum regular hourly wage for a call. The rate has not been increased since at least 1999. Officers are considered on call for the 14 hours they are off their regular 10-hour shift.
Police Chief RJ Cripps looked at other similar-sized cities. On-call rates ranged from $2.50 per hour in Brownton and Buffalo Lake to $3.75 per hour in Twin Valley.
Cripps explained that part-time officers also work for other departments and are paid more from other agencies.
Council Member Brenda Fogarty said that it is hard to find good officers and she would be in favor of increasing the wage.
The increase to $3 is estimated to increase the department’s budget by $2,700 annually.
