SL Council discusses county shed options, street parking near Lakeside
The Silver Lake City Council discussed its options in acquiring a shed owned by McLeod County at its quarterly meeting Monday, April 1.
The city has been renting the shed since the county vacated it in 2014. In return for the use of the majority of the shed, the city has plowed and swept two miles of county roads within the city limits.
McLeod County proposed turning over ownership of the shed and roughly 2.4 acres to the city in exchange for plowing and sweeping the same two miles of county roads for 25 years. The county values the land and building at $172,800. Members of the city council felt that 25 years was too long.
A resident expressed concerns over the condition of the building and possible contaminates in the land.
The council instructed City Clerk Jon Jerabek to counter with an offer of plowing and sweeping for 10 years after any necessary repairs and soil borings are completed.
The council also discussed parking options in front of Lakeside Elementary School. Glencoe-Silver Lake Superintendent Chris Sonju approached the council about the possibility of changing the parking on the east side of Lake Avenue (across the street from the school) to one- or two-hour parking during school hours.
