On split vote, Glencoe City Council suspends firefighter over Facebook post
A Glencoe firefighter has been suspended from the fire department for two months after a divided city council deemed he violated city policy for a racially inappropriate social media post and violation of the city’s social media use policy.
After a closed-door meeting last Monday, Aug. 17, the city council voted 3-2 to suspend firefighter Richard Howell for a Facebook post he made June 22. The motion to suspend Howell was made by Councilor Cory Neid, seconded by Milan Alexander. In a roll-call vote, councilors Neid, Allen Robeck, and Alexander supported the suspension. Councilors Paul Lemke and John Schrupp opposed it. Lemke and Schrupp are on record favoring termination, said City Administrator Mark Larson.
