Stewart renews law enforcement contract with sheriff’s department
The city of Stewart’s annual cost of police protection will decline slightly in 2017, the City Council learned Monday night.
Sheriff Scott Rehmann said the 2017 cost will be about $1,300 less than 2016. The city budgeted $105,643 for law enforcement in 2016.
Rehmann said part of the contract is based on the average salary of its deputies. He said one of the county’s longtime deputies had moved from the patrol unit to civil service process, which reduced the overall average of deputy salaries.
The 2018 cost will increase slightly, Rehmann said, based on anticipated salary increases.
Council Member Kevin Klucas said the city has been pleased with the service provided by the sheriff’s office.
“Many of the comments I’ve heard is that we should have done this (contracting with the sheriff’s office) a long time ago,” said Klucas.
The city used to have its own police department.
