Stewart struggles with finding daytime emergency medical responders

The city of Stewart is looking for ways to beef up its emergency medical responder (more commonly known as first responder) crew, and to address staffing shortages during daytime hours.
Carol Nelson, captain of the emergency medical responders (EMRs), said the unit had recently changed its protocol to allow the unit to have just one EMR respond as long as a deputy is on scene. In the past, the protocol was to have at least two EMRs on board the truck before responding.
Nelson said she discussed the issue with the EMRs medical director, Dr. Olson, who had concerns about the lack of personnel during the day.
Olson, Nelson reported, had asked if Stewart should continue its EMR unit if there weren’t enough responders.
“That’s not what I expected to hear, but I wasn’t totally surprised,” said Nelson.
