Thanks for making me feel welcome; you’re in good hands

When I first started with The Chronicle in March of 2018, I told Lori Copler, my first editor at the newspaper, driving into Glencoe everyday was therapeutic. It was a way for me to jump back into an environment similar to that where I grew up in Monticello — small, homey, and community-oriented.
All the way up until now, nothing has changed with that sentiment. The community is a place where people — usually volunteers — come together to make it a better place to live. You see the same faces doing the same things frequently, whether it’s Rich Glennie taking his walks around town, seeing attorneys walking to and from the courthouse, or the guy who walks to the Casey’s via East 10th Street every single day — rain, sleet, snow, hail, or even sunshine. He says he does it as exercise and buys cigarettes when he gets there.
It feels good and comfortable to be in Glencoe, and I will always love that about the city, but if I want to achieve goals I have set for my career, I can’t always do what’s comfortable and what feels good.
For example, I’ve been closely following a clinical psychologist — Jordan Peterson — who basically wrote an entire book explaining why it’s important to occupy the place between what he calls chaos and order, and he’s working on a second book. The ancient Taoist symbol called the taijitu — more commonly known as the yin and yang circle — depicts well what Peterson writes and lectures about.
He offers that a person shouldn’t ever feel completely comfortable (order) or completely out-of-sorts (chaos) for optimal success. So as much as I’ve loved the people and the work I’ve been involved in, and as much as I’m convinced McLeod County was where I needed to be the last two years.
It’s time to take a step towards chaos.

Before I move along
But before I don’t have anymore bylines in The Chronicle, there are two things I think it’s important for people to know about my experience here.
