Townships ask county to bring recycling services closer to home
During a portion of the McLeod County Board meeting allotted for public input, Tuesday, Jan. 21, Nathan Schmalz, a Winsted Township supervisor, threw a wrench into the county’s efforts in finding a recycling solution that works for everybody.
The county’s had issues the past few years with recycling sites located in various cities and townships. Whether the issue is residents throwing residue — or non-recyclable waste — into recycling bins because they're bad actors or because they don't know what can and can't be recycled, it's costing taxpayers.
One of the solutions on the table, and the option board members seem to favor, is to consolidate the recycling sites, from the 13 current rural sites down to around four or five. With the cost savings of consolidation, the county could then look at securing the sites with staffing and fencing.
