Track and field teams open in Mankato

Safely tucked away indoors as winter attempted to hold on outside, the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ and girls’ track and field teams were able to successfully commence their season on Thursday, April 7, at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
It was a gripping beginning to the 2016 campaign for both squads, with the boys finishing in a first-place tie with Mankato Loyola/Cleveland and the girls finishing in second, just one point behind Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.

The boys’ team accumulated 100.333 points in its tie atop the standings, buoyed by seven individual first-place finishes.
Dylan Melchert placed first in the 200-meter dash, with a time of 25.08 seconds, with Michael Schaefer winning the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 7.16 seconds.
The Panthers’ 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay teams also placed first with respective times of 1:39.68 and 3:47.71.
Mitchell Rothstein on both the long jump and triple jump competitions, leaping 18 feet, 1 inch to win the long jump and 39-01 to take the triple jump. Jacob Litzau claimed GSL’s seventh top finish with a toss of 44-10.5 in the shot put.
Melchert finished second in the 55-meter dash (7.00), as did Alfredo Pena in the 400-meter dash (57.74), Tyler Ehrke in the 55-meter high hurdles (9.18) and Garret Novak in the high jump (5-03).
Placing third on the night were: Kyle Christensen in the 200-meter dash (26.20), Austin Schroepfer in the 1600-meter run (4:55.71) and Connor Kantack in the shot put (40-.

The GSL girls posted 96 points in the meet, putting up four first-place and five second-place results.
Maddie Monahan claimed a top spot in the 55-meter hurdles with a run of 10.05, with Deanna Bondhus winning the long jump with a leap of 15-04 and Zoe Christensen claiming first in the shot put with a lob of 34-02.5.
The Panthers’ 4x400-meter relay quartet ran its way to first with a time of 4:25.37.
Emily Muetzel placed second in the 400-meter dash (1:04.45), as did Majkya Metcalf in the 1600-meter run (6:07.01), Mickalyn Frahm in the 55-meter hurdles (10.09), Deanna Bondhus in the triple jump (31-09), as well as the 4x200- and 4x800-meter relay teams  in respective times of 1:57.68 and 11:17.26.
Taking third at the meet were: Rhyan Herrmann in the 200-meter dash (29.67), Emily Graupmann in the 400-meter dash (1:05.24), Ellie Schmidt in the 800-meter run (2:49.84) and Madalyn Lemke in the 1600-meter run (6:14.38.
