Transformer failure leaves part of county courthouse in the dark

Glencoe firefighters were dispatched to the corner of North Hennepin Avenue and East 10th Street Monday morning after a transformer outside the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office failed. Firefighters found flames and smoke pouring out of the transformer box. The failure left much of the courthouse with temporary power. The facility was closed Monday but reopened for business as usual Tuesday.

A transformer failure at the McLeod County Courthouse in Glencoe left workers in the dark.
Just after 10 a.m. Monday, July 8, one of three 250-kilovolt amp (KVA) transformers in a case outside the sheriff’s office on the southwest corner of the courthouse complex at the corner of East 10th Street and North Hennepin Avenue failed.
A member of the county’s facilities staff working outside reportedly discovered the failure. Glencoe firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Fire Chief Cory Scheidt reported open flames were present as firefighters opened the case containing the three transformers. Using dry chemicals, Scheidt said, firefighters and crewmen from Glencoe Light & Power squelched the flames. There were no injuries reported in putting the fire out.
