Truck overturns, spills fertilizer

On Saturday, May 5, at 9:59 a.m., the Renville County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call reporting that a semi-tractor trailer had overturned in the ditch on County Road 11 near the intersection of 405th Street in Osceola Township. The initial caller reported that the driver was out of the vehicle and that several tanks that were secured on the trailer had spilled their contents into the ditch.
Responders on scene spoke with the driver and learned that while attempting to negotiate a curve in the road, the vehicle partially left the roadway. The driver reported that he was able to regain control of the vehicle but that the liquid in the tanks shifted, causing the vehicle to overturn into the ditch. The driver, who was identified as Charles F. Baumgartner, age 64, of Olivia, was able to extricate himself from the vehicle prior to arrival of first responders. Baumgartner was transported to Renville County Hospital and Clinics with minor injuries. He was treated and later released.
Baumgartner informed deputies on scene that the tanks contained an unknown amount of liquid fertilizer. Contact was made with the Minnesota Duty Officer to coordinate a cleanup response for the chemicals.
The crash remains under investigation by the sheriff’s office; however, it is believed that speed may have been a contributing factor.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Olivia Ambulance and the Bird Island Medical Response Unit.
