Veterans Day program Nov. 11 at high school

A Hutchinson man was killed and a Hutchinson Police officer was shot in the ankle late Sunday afternoon in Hutchinson.
The slain man has been identified as 49-year-old Luverne Roy Christensen. The police officer had not been identified as of Tuesday morning.
Police Chief Dan Hatten said in a news conference Sunday evening that officers were called to a residence in the 500 block of Harmony Lane about 4:15 p.m. for what was termed a verbal disturbance.
At some point, a scuffle occurred between the suspect and the officer. As a result, the officer was shot in the leg, and Christensen was killed in an exhange of gunfire with other officers.
Hatten said it is unclear who shot the suspect, as several officers were on scene, including McLeod County Sheriff’s deputies and Minnesota State Patrol troopers.
The police officer was taken to the Hutchinson Health Hospital and then airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. He has since been discharged.
Because it is an officer-involved shooting, the investigation has been turned over to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
Hatten said some officers have been put on paid administrative leave “for their well-being,” which is standard practice.
The last time a Hutchinson Police officer was shot was in 1989, when Officer Michael Hogan was killed by a shoplifting suspect at the JC Penney store.
