Volunteers keep Thanksgiving tradition going in Silver Lake

When word spread around Silver Lake the traditional Thanksgiving dinner at the Silver Lake Auditorium needed new leadership this year, Alexis Winfrey, Mary Kay Doering and others decided they weren’t going to give up a treasured community event without a fight.
Thanks to the efforts of the two women and a group of civic-minded folks in the Silver Lake Civic Association, the Silver Lake Ambassadors, a committee of children, Mayor Dorothy Butler and others, the community Thanksgiving meal will be served tomorrow afternoon, Nov. 28, at the Silver Lake Auditorium. The doors for the no-cost event open at noon and the traditional meal will be served family-style at 1 p.m. After the meal, bingo and a coloring contest will be held. Door prizes will be awarded.
For 16 years, Bruce Bebo and a group of volunteers served the Thanksgiving meal. Many of those volunteers are again helping with the planning and implementation of the popular holiday event. Doering said the experience the volunteers bring is valuable.
