When snow finally melts, county eyeing threat of flooding
As snow continues to blanket the Midwest, McLeod County Emergency Management Director Kevin Matthews and the rest of his staff, like many people, have their eyes on spring, but not just for shorts and T-shirt season.
With a wet fall that stymied construction schedules and record amounts of snowfall this winter, Matthews said the moisture content and the sheer volume of snow is a serious “threat” for springtime flooding.
“We’re preparing for a higher impact snow melt,” Matthews said.
He doesn’t want to see temperatures rise rapidly, though it may be what most people look forward to, because of the impacts it may have on residential property and roads.
Some of the roads considered “frequent flyers,” as Matthews put it, which usually see closures due to flooding are Morningside Avenue in Glencoe, north of East First Street; 160th Street in Hutchinson; some roads in the Biscay area; and Division Street in Brownton.
