Wrestlers wrap up regular season

A quadrangular meet at New Ulm followed by a home triangular wrapped up the regular season for the Glencoe-Silver Lake/Lester Prairie wrestling team last week.
The Panthers went 1-2 at the quadrangular on Thursday, Feb. 8, topping Fulda-Murray County Central 64-6, while falling 42-21 to New Ulm Area and 52-24 to Windom-Mountain Lake.
There were wins aplenty for GSL against the Fulda co-op squad.
Carter Ruschmeier won by fall at 106, as did Joe Knudten at 138, Riley Butcher at 160 and Theo Luciano at 170.
Zachary Voelz won by a 12-0 major decision at 145, and the Panthers also claimed six forfeit wins.
GSL/LP started well against Windom-Mountain Lake, with Ruschmeier and Sawyer Varpness (113) winning by 12-1 major decision and by fall, respectively.
But the Eagles took nine of the next 12 matches en route to their win. Cody Rae (182) won by 15-0 technical fall, with Aaron Castillo (220) winning 7-0 and Brandon Holmers (285) by fall to account for the other Panther match wins.
Against New Ulm, Varpness earned a 6-4 decision while Rae and Butcher won by fall in a 48-21 loss.
It was a difficult night for GSL/LP on its home floor the next night as the Panthers lost 64-9 to Litchfield and 72-3 to Scott West.
Varpness earned a 4-2 decision, with Rae claiming a forfeit to account for GSL/LP’s points against Litchfield, while Ruschmeier’s meet-opening 9-2 decision was the Panthers’ lone points against Scott West.
GSL/LP takes on St. Peter in the opening round of the Section 2AA Tournament on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
