To the Editor:
We invite readers to take a stand against domestic violence.
October has been designated National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and we invite readers to learn more about services and help available at www.mcleodal [1]
liance.org.
Domestic violence is a problem that is too often kept quiet, or ends with devastating results. So far in 2014, at least 12 Minnesotans have been killed as a result of domestic violence. In 2013, we provided domestic violence services to 245 people in our community. Our community’s response is critical both for victims’ safety and perpetrator accountability. People who are victimized must be provided protection and given the support necessary to improve their circumstances.
Now, more than ever, it is more and more difficult for families living with violence to escape the abuse. And, perpetrators must be held accountable for their violence and be given appropriate penalties that require changes in their behavior.
Ending domestic violence takes community involvement. Please help us stop the violence. Reinforce support for programs that focus on the safety and justice for those who are abused. Let’s work together to create change, and honor Minnesotans who’ve lost their lives due to domestic violence.
If you or someone you know is struggling with abuse, please seek assistance from law enforcement or contact us at 320-234-7933. We thank you for your time, interest and support to those living in McLeod County and in Minnesota.
