The city of Brownton had just one person show up for its truth-in-taxation hearing Tuesday, Dec. 6.
The city is proposing a 1.8 percent tax increase for 2017, which will generate an additional revenue of about $6,700.
City Clerk Ella Kruse said the city has started payments on the fire department’s newest truck, which was the reason for the increase. Kruse also noted that the levy “has stayed flat over the past quite a few years, and the increase this year is less than 2 percent.”
The one resident who attended said the city portion of his taxes was increasing significantly in 2017. After looking at the resident’s tax statement, Kruse indicated that the increase was due to an increase in the valuation of his property, and suggested that he speak to the county assessor about the assessed value.
During its regular meeting agenda, the City Council voted to increase the rate for natural gas to $1.60 per 100 cubic feet (CCF) of natural gas from $1.50.
