With the Glencoe-Silver Lake boys’ basketball team having been dominated by visiting St. Peter for more than half of the Section 2AA playoff opener on Monday, March 6, it was clear that it just wasn’t Panthers’ night.
Until it suddenly became clear that it absolutely was their night.
“The first half, we played tight and not to lose,” coach Robb DeCorsey said. “Things didn’t do much better early in the second half, but then things turned and we just kept chipping away. We played aggressive – exactly as we had to – and we believed we could do it.”
Trailing 46-27 with 15 minutes remaining in regulation and having been completely overshadowed by a high energy contingent of Saints players and fans, third-seeded GSL decided it wasn’t a good night for season’s end after all and put forth an impressive surge that concluded in a 49-point second half and a 73-64 victory over a shell-shocked St. Peter assembly.
The Saints, seeded sixth, had led the game from the start and enforced their lead by the power of the three-point shot, downing a three to quash any hint of Panther optimism in the first half en route to taking a 38-24 advantage at the break.
