Two weeks into April, and winter does not want to let go.
Much to the chagrin of spring sports teams at Glencoe-Silver Lake, as well as throughout most of the upper Midwest, mid-April feels more like mid-February and there is little optimism for breaking free of the indoor cocoon anytime soon.
Areas customarily used by the GSL wrestling and basketball teams have been serving as shelters for marooned Panther baseball, softball and golf teams for the better part of a month.
The first two weeks of Panther spring sports schedules have begun to resemble a heavily-redacted declassified government document.
Lines of postponement that ran through last week’s initial slate of games have carried into this week as another blanket of heavy, wet, white snow descended on the area again last weekend with even more possible this coming weekend.
Baseball and softball games set to take place on Tuesday, April 10, have been moved to May 1, with a girls’ golf matchup postponed until a yet-to-be determined date.
Only the GSL track and field teams evaded the postponements, with an indoor meet at Minnesota State University-Mankato remaining on the schedule.
No Panther teams escaped Thursday’s postponements, as track and field, baseball, softball and golf all had events postponed until an undetermined future date.
Friday’s GSL/Maple Lake baseball game has also been pushed off until a time in which green eventually replaces white as the dominant color on the ground.
