The Brownton City Council officially awarded the bid for the underground utility and street surface portion of its comprehensive improvement project at a special meeting April 16.
The council had tabled the awarding of the bid pending approval by Rural Developoment of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), which is providing low-interest loans and grants to help finance the project.
The low bidder was R&R Excavating, Inc., of Hutchinson, with a bid of $4.84 million. It was the lowest of six bids the city received for the work.
The city also approved a low bid from Braun Intertec of $29,900 for soil and material testing.
According to minutes from the meeting, Short Elliott Hendrickson (SEH), Inc., the city’s engineering consultant, will host a pre-construction meeting this week. Tree removal may begin as early next week, and the tree cutters will speak with property owners regarding the trees on their property prior to removal.
