SCHOOL BOARD MEETING MINUTES
GLENCOE-SILVER LAKE SCHOOLS - INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT #2859
DATE October 8, 2018
TIME 7:00 p.m.
PLACE: GSL Schools Community Room #443/444
Board Chair Alsleben called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. The following board members were present: Christianson, Lindeman, Kuester, Twiss and VonBerge. In addition, Superintendent Chris Sonju, Business Manager Michelle Sander, Principals Bill Butler and Matt Foss; Administrative Assistant Shelley Renville, GSL Technology Staff Mike Morris, McLeod County Chronicle Editor John Mueller, guest speaker Mary Reedy from CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP and Social Studies Teacher Brea Wiblemo.
The Pledge of Allegiance was recited.
Announcements the next regular School Board meeting will be on Monday, November 12th at 7:00 p.m. in the GSL Schools Community Room #443/444.
Superintendent Sonju acknowledged the official retirement of Carol Dammann, the Districts Payroll Coordinator after 32+ years.
No public input to the agenda was given.
Mary Reedy, Principal, representing CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP, presented the Financial Statements for the 2018 Fiscal Year.
Business Manager Sander reported to the board. Sander noted that if anyone has any questions or concerns regarding the Audit to please, reach out to her. As of September 30th, the numbers were locked in and there was an increase of .31% in the overall levy. Sander was happy to announce that we received very good news regarding the Lead in Water testing results. 47 water sources were tested and there were no issues. A couple of non-drinking water sources tested higher, so the faucets will be switched out. The cost was $18.50 per test, totaling $869.50.
Principals Butler and Foss presented to the board.
No Student Government reports were given.
Superintendent Sonju reported to the board. He mentioned the numerous community forums being held throughout the community pertaining to the levy referendum, which will be on the ballot on November 6, 2018. In addition, Terrance Talley will be at the high school auditorium at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 10, 2018. He is a nationally known speaker and will bring forth a great message. All are welcome to attend.
Committee Reports: Director Twiss reported that the ECFE has 90 students in preschool.
Director Lindeman motioned to approve the agenda. Director Christianson seconded. All in favor, motion carried.
Director Twiss motioned to approve the consent agenda. Director Kuester seconded. All in favor, motion carried.
Bills: September bills are on file and available for review at the Superintendent’s Office, 1621 East 16th Street, Glencoe.

Leave Requests:

Old Business:
Deferred from the June and September 2018 school board meetings, additional coverage for the Network Security/Privacy Policy was discussed and the premium for $1.5 million of coverage was $3,627.00. The pro-rated premium effective 11/1/2018 will be $2,420.00. Motion made by Director Kuester seconded by Director Lindeman to approve the additional Network Security/Privacy Insurance Policy effective 11/1/2018.
Brea Wiblemo, Social Studies Teacher, requests approval for a 13-day trip to Europe, likely Italy and Greece, in June 2021. Students who will be upperclassmen in the 2020-2021 school year would be eligible and would have the option of earning a half credit elective in social studies. The trip would be educational and align with World History courses. The Italy and Greece trip would be $5,155 or $156/month (or to France and Spain for $4,000 or $121 month), depending on student and teacher factors. By booking the tour now, students will have 33 months (2 years, 9 months) to make their payments. Donations will be sought from charitable organizations such as Lions’ Clubs, SnoPros, and the Booster Club. Motion made by Director VonBerge seconded by Director Twiss to approve the 13-day trip abroad with the district paying the $2500 insurance rider. Board Chair Alsleben voted against.
New Business:
Superintendent Sonju recommends the seniority list for the certified staff be posted for 20 days to provide employees with an opportunity to identify potential inaccuracies in the list. Motion made by Director Kuester seconded by Director VonBerge to post the Education Minnesota: GSL seniority list for 20 days.
Superintendent Sonju recommends the employees of SEIU Local #284 seniority list be posted for 20 days to provide employees with an opportunity to identify potential inaccuracies in the list. Motion made by Director Christianson seconded by Director Twiss to post the SEIU Local #284 seniority list for 20 days.
Director Twiss moved to adopt the limited expansion of the school district’s transportation for students in K-6 (residing greater than one-half mile from their school and from Lincoln Junior High School), and junior high students (residing greater than one mile from their school), under the conditions specified for the 2018-2019 school year only beginning on November 19, 2018, and concluding on March 22, 2019, at no additional cost to the school district. Director Lindeman seconded. Approved unanimously.
Sander announced that no bids were received for snow removal for the 2018-2019 school year.
Director VonBerge moved to adopt the resolution supporting the district application to the Minnesota State High School League Foundation for reimbursement of activity fees from students who qualify for free and reduced lunches as submitted by Activities Director Schwirtz. Director Twiss seconded. Approved unanimously.
Motion made by Director Lindeman to adopt the resolution to accept donations.
