In a special meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 26, the Silver Lake City Council met with and hired Darrell Kaczmarek as its municipal liquor store manager, more colloquially known as the “Muni.” Kaczmarek, a Silver Lake resident, used to serve as its lead bartender.
As soon as Mayor Dorothy Butler opened the meeting, Kaczmarek was met with questions from across the council, barring Butler, a member of the personnel committee that recommended him.
Councilor Brenda Fogarty asked what kind of initiative Kaczmarek will take to bring the Muni in a positive direction. He said his experience watching others do the job and what they’ve done well will guide him, but that he would like to delineate from previous managers in the entertainment sector. Kaczmarek lobbied for less expensive but more frequent live entertainment — a move he said would likely pull more people into the bar and hopefully drive profits.
