More than 30 Silver Lake residents attended a special city council meeting Monday, July 27. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the police services contract with the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office.
At its regular meeting July 20, the city council voted 3-2 to disband the local police department in favor of contracted services with the sheriff’s office. Mayor Dorothy Butler and Councilor Brenda Fogarty voted against the disbandment.
During the public comment portion of the meeting Monday, July 27, around 10 residents let the council know of their disappointment with the decision to disband the police department and the communication from the council during the process. Residents asked councilors to reconsider the decision.
Earlier in the month, the city circulated an online survey asking for resident feedback. Around 170 responses were received with mixed results.
